The Exceptional Student Education Department (E.S.E.) offices are located at the old courthouse in LaBelle, Florida (corner of US Highway 80 and County Road 29) and at 475 East Osceola Avenue in Clewiston, Florida.
Through the Exceptional Student Education Department, the District offers a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in compliance with the federally mandated 2009 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). A continuum of services and programs is available to meet the individual needs of students requiring special education, ages 3 through 21. Services and related services are provided through an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and are based on each child's unique needs, as related to present levels of educational performance.
The continuum of services may be provided in a variety of settings, which include regular classrooms and resource room settings, separate full-time or near full-time classrooms, and hospital or homebound. Some students with low incidence handicaps are served through contract arrangements with Lee County Schools. The IEP team, which includes parent input, determines the amount and frequency of special education services and regular education participation. Numerous service delivery models are available in Hendry County, including regular education, intensive reading, co-teaching, and consultative services. Speech and language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Behavioral Support and Special Transportation are also provided as needed. Special education services are provided for students with many disabilities, including young adults with learning disabilities, mental handicaps, emotional handicaps, language or speech impairments, visual impairments, autism, hearing impairment, other health impairments, developmental delays, and gifted.
With the exception of very specialized low-incidence programs, the student will attend a school within the geographical school choice zone of residence. Parents and students who are moving the Hendry County from another district in Florida, or from out of state, should contact the Registration Office in Clewiston at (863) 902-4244 or their geographic school of assignment in LaBelle for information regarding enrollment and special education services.
